VALDESE — Draughn graduate Aaryn Fusco recently became the fifth recipient of the Coach Tate Foundation Scholarship, given in memory of former Drexel recreation coach Johnny Tate.
“I feel like this is an honor, and he’s always been like a father figure to everybody,” said Fusco, a frequent volunteer member of the Coach Tate football camp staff.
Fusco was a member of the Wildcat basketball and track squads throughout his athletic career at DHS. He averaged nearly five points a game last winter, with a season-high 18 versus West Lincoln.
In the spring, Fusco participated in the long jump, triple jump and pole vault events for the Wildcats. He capped his senior year with top-five pole vault performances at the CVAC (second), 2A regional (third) and 2A state (fifth) championship meets.
Fusco plans to attend East Tennessee State University in the fall and major in exercise science. He also plans to walk on the track and field team to participate in pole vault.
